Beyond Food: Pauperism Project, Inc. Serves the Local Homeless Population with Toiletries
WASHINGTON – July 24, 2014 – Pauperism Project, Inc. , a locally established non-profit organization formed to provide relief to chronically homeless individuals in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, will host an outreach event at Franklin Square Park in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, July 26 at 10 am. Organization volunteers will pass out food and toiletry items to individuals in need.
The predominately youth driven organization has coordinated various homeless outreach efforts in Washington, D.C. over the past several years and has partnered with several top, nationally recognized brands to provide food, clothing and toiletry items, such as full-sized bottles of body wash, bars of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products.
“When most people think about helping the homeless, providing food is almost always the first thought,” said Monika Mason, president and founder of Pauperism Project, Inc . “We wanted to go beyond food and provide them with clothes and toiletry items as well. We’ve been so fortunate to receive a multitude of donations from local franchise restaurants, religious institutions and volunteers. Washington, D.C. has one of the largest homeless populations in the country and we want to do all that we can to reduce our homeless population footprint.”
NEWS FACTS:
· Fifth largest homeless population – According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the Washington, D.C. metro area has an estimated 13,200 homeless people, making it the fifth largest homeless population in the United States among large metro areas.
· Exceeding the national average – The State of Homelessness in America 2014 report states that the national rate of people experiencing homelessness in 2013 was 19 people per 10,000 people. Washington, D.C. exceeds the national average rate with 106 people experiencing homelessness per 10,000 people.
· Chronically homeless – About 18 percent of the homeless population -- approximately 610,000 people in the United States – are considered chronically homeless, which is defined as someone who has experienced homelessness for a year or longer or someone who has experienced at least four episodes of homelessness in the last three years and has a disability.
